The Ohio Liberty Council Calls for Transparency in Disqualification of Primary Candidates

The Ohio Liberty Council (OLC) is calling for transparency from the Ohio Secretary of State in the disqualification of five candidates from the 2010 primary ballot. Numerous irregularities have been noted and the OLC is demanding a full accounting of the ballot review process from receipt to validation to decision. In addition to two Attorney General candidates, three Candidates for U.S. Senate, Ms. Brunner’s opponents, were disqualified by the Secretary of State.

Candidates Steve Christopher for Attorney General and Tracy Johnson for US Senate have called on the Secretary’s office to conduct an internal investigation into the handling of their petitions. The OLC believes the Secretary of State has an obligation to assure the citizens of Ohio a transparent and ethical process of signature validation, and the political parties have an obligation to assure the process is completed ethically. The OLC is appalled by the silence and apparent indifference with which both major parties – Democrat and Republican – have responded to the disqualification of these candidates.

The OLC calls upon both parties and the Secretary of State to uphold the right of Ohioans to choose their candidates and to participate freely in the election process without fear of subversion. Lack of transparency and/or ethics violations in a primary or general election cycle damage the constitutional right of citizens to select their representatives in government.

Senator Grendell has called for an investigation into the action of the Office of the Secretary of State and has asked the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate to support fair and ethical election practices by adding their voice to the demand for a full investigation. The OLC is in full support of this measure.

President of the Ohio Liberty Council, Chris Littleton, was quoted, “Our organization believes in the importance of transparency in the electoral process. While we are making no accusations in this scenario, when multiple candidates express concern with the process - it’s clear a thorough investigation should be launched. We are simply seeking truth in this matter.”
