A LOOK AT THE "WE ARE OHIO" "TEACHERS OPPOSE ISSUE 2" AD

YOU'VE SEEN THEIR AD ...

The "We Are Ohio" folks are at it again, with another ad filled with scare tactics.  In this one the teacher, Courtney Johnson, states that Issue 2 will restrict collective bargaining "for smaller class sizes, up to date text books and even negotiating our school safety issues ..."   The references cited are SB5, Sec. 4117.08(c) and 4117.081(A)(B).  These sections are portions of the job description of the employer.

She goes on to say that Issue 2 could mean "more standardized testing and less time on classroom learning." The sections cited are 3317.13(B)(C).  In reality, Section 3317.13 (B) states that "each teacher shall be paid a salary."  Section 3317.13(C) deals with evaluating the teacher's performance and the performance of students assigned to the teacher's classroom.   I find it odd that any teacher who wants the best for his or her students  would object to testing which would show where they excell and where some improvement is needed.  I also question why any teacher, other than those who are giving less than their best, would object to personal evaluations which could result in a merit raise.

The union has been involved in an extremely aggressive propaganda campaign telling their members that if Issue 2 passes, jobs will be lost.   Teachers (and other public employees)  who think that Issue 2 is the "big bad wolf" which must be defeated need to realize that, should that happen, municipalities all around the state will have no options left but to do some deep cuts.  Cuts which will hurt the students and eliminate several jobs at all levels.
